The Benefits of Coconut Oil

You see coconut oil in many human beauty products, but did you know that this tropical elixir can benefit dogs’ skin and coats too?

Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which is known for its antimicrobial properties. That means it can help kill bacteria on the skin and reduce inflammation. Coconut oil also has high levels of linoleic acid, which can be used as an emollient—for its skin soothing and softening benefits. Plus, extra virgin coconut oil in particular has been proven to lock in moisture, helping skin feel healthy and hydrated.

While it’s obvious why all of the above make coconut oil a great human skin and body care remedy, coconut oil’s skin-loving benefits can also provide some healthy perks for your pup. When applied topically, coconut oil can help reduce allergic reactions, prevent infection, and even make your Best Dog Friend less susceptible to tiny troublemakers like fleas, ticks, and mites. Now that’s one magical fruit!

When trying a home remedy, always consult your veterinarian first to make sure it’s a good natural option for your dog. Once you have your vet’s approval, follow these simple steps for a weekly coconut oil ritual:

  • Choose a cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil.
  • Rub a small amount onto your hands, then apply it onto your dog’s coat. Make sure to run your fingers through their strands and lightly massage the oil into their skin.
  • Let the oil stay on your dog’s skin for about five minutes before rinsing it off with water. You can also use a gentle shampoo with coconut oil, like The Fur Wash or The Hair Wash, to complement your at-home spa sesh.
