A dog’s life is precious, and as dog lovers, we want to spend as much time as possible with them. With over a hundred dog breeds, dog lovers can’t help but wonder which breeds live longer than others and why.
As a good rule of thumb, smaller dog breeds typically have a longer life expectancy than their large dog buddies. This is why a majority of the dog breeds on this list are on the smaller side. Sure, they’re tiny, but they’re also mighty!
New Guinea Singing Dog
Life expectancy: 18-20 years
The New Guinea Singing Dog is special for multiple reasons. For one, they are both the world’s rarest breed and have the longest life span of any dog. Right now, there are only approximately 100 New Guinea Singing Dogs on the planet. They are also one of the largest dogs to have a lengthy life expectancy, as they typically weigh between 20 and 30 pounds.
Chihuahua
Life expectancy: 17-20 years
Chihuahuas are typically known for two things; being nervous and living for a long time. These teeny-tiny dogs have such an incredible lifespan because they are not prone to serious genetic disorders. So while a Chihuahua might need CBD oil to relieve their constant stress, they will be there for the long haul.
Jack Russell Terrier
Life expectancy: 16-20 years
Jack Russell Terriers are a very energetic dog breed, and they don’t lose steam quickly. They can just go, go, go! Their zest for life keeps them in tip-top shape, which only improves their life expectancy. It’s widely known that Jack Russell Terriers were fox hunters, which explains their high energy levels!
Toy Poodle
Life expectancy: 16-20 years
The Toy Poodle is a fan favorite, and for a good reason. These pint-sized dogs are intelligent, well-behaved, and will be with you for years to come. While Miniature and Standard poodles also have a long life expectancy, Toy Poodles have the longest lifespan of the Poodle bunch.
Cockapoo
Life expectancy: 15-18 years
The first hybrid breed on the list, the Cockapoo is a friendly and smart breed with a great life expectancy. Cockapoos are a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Their longevity is mostly attributed to their Poodle side, which also gives them their smarts! These beyond cute canines are also very low-maintenance because they don’t shed or trigger allergies.
